A History of the Walkie Talkie
The very first walkie talkie was made by Gavin Manufacturing Company, which is now Motorola, in 1940. They were used by the allied forces in World War II and they were carried in a backpack (that’s how big they were!) by the soldiers.
Another inventor also developed a two way radio which he named ‘packsets’; Although Motorola has always been the dominant manufacturer.
Around the same time that the walkie talkie was made, another smaller hand held two way radio was designed, these were called Handie-Talkies, a name which Motorola trademarked.
When the war ended two way radios, or walkie talkies, were made available to the general public. They weighed about 5 pounds which is quite a heavy weight to have clipped to your belt!
