Home Decorating As A Business

January 25th, 2010

If you think you would like to change careers and get into something you are more passionate about, there has never been a better time.  In fact, it is never too late to start living your dream life.  The more excuses you have in terms of money or time or both, the less likely you will be to take the actions to get started.  With the range of products and services available today, there is certainly some way to find your ideal position.  For many, interior decorating turns out to be a pretty flexible career choice.  You can either work for yourself, starting out as a consultant or doing free home staging for friends and family and then moving up to paid local opportunities.

Like with any business, home decor can be competitive.  It all depends on your outlook and take on the products you have to present.  Without a formal degree, you will find it hard to work for a larger company.  If you don’t have a fancy degree or letters after your name, it is hard to get your feet in the door, so to speak.  To my knowledge, Martha Stewart doesn’t have a degree in this and she is doing okay.  So, it isn’t absolutely necessary but it does help to get that clout just starting out.  If you have been in a professional setting, then you might already know how to promote yourself in the local media channels; newspaper, TV or internet marketing.

Interior design is one of those things that is hard to teach.  It is something that seemingly someone has or doesn’t have.  And, because there are so many people in the field, you can certainly find someone who has a similar taste in home decorating as you do.  This is a critical aspect.  While you don’t necessarily want someone who has your exact style, being able to connect with your clients is key.  When you are able to do this and have great interior design ideas, your business will begin to grow and grow.
