High Temperature Mortar
Making your own pizza oven can be one of the most satisfying projects that you can do in your own back yard. Imagine pulling delicious pizzas, browned and bubbling, out of your own brick oven and serving them up to your family and friends!
There are a lot of steps to this project but it’s just a matter of working through them, step by step. In this article I will explain how to mix a high temperature mortar to use for building your own pizza oven.
Method
A good high temperature mortar can be made using standard Portland Cement, brick sand or brickies sand, Hydrated Lime, and Fireclay. Most of these ingredients can be found at your local hardware or building supply store. You might have a little trouble finding Fireclay, but try calling around insulation suppliers or hobbyist clay suppliers.
A good ratio is 1 part Portland, 3 parts sand, 1 part fireclay and 1 part lime by volume. Mix the dry ingredients together, then add just enough water to make a sticky mortar. It should be about the consistency of potters clay, or a little runnier.
This mortar will handle the high heat of a wood fired oven with very little cracking!
